The Kennington Association is completely dependent on volunteers and needs many to make it a successful concern.

The Executive Committee is made up of up to12 members plus at least four Officers (Chair, Deputy Chair, Secretary and Treasurer) for a total of no more than 16. We also depend heavily on our administrative assistant, Charity Auction leader, Bazaar Coordinator, and Planning Forum head.

FOLSAP: Lollard Street Adventure Playground

Dear Councillor Robbins

Over the past six months the Friends ofLollard Street Adventure Playground have been pleading with you to delay theclosure of our Adventure Playground to enable us to find an alternative modelof management that would retain its opening hours to fit the needs of parentsand children for safe after-school provision in an area of great need. You tookthe time to listen to parents and the young children who attended a meetingwith you in May. You seemed to understand from what you heard, that this wasnot just about the need for free and adventurous play with excellent and variedindoor provision, important though that is. But, that this was also asafeguarding issue relating to after-school provision for parents struggling towork, often in low paid jobs with inflexible hours.

You persuaded us that it would beworthwhile our trying to produce a business plan and get properly constituted,in the spirit of the ’cooperative’ council! You assured us that your officerswould provide us with the necessary information to do this so that we would beable to calculate costs and research outside partners and funders. We wereworking hard to do this when we learned that you had already gone out to seektenders from a long list of organisations with whom the Council already hadcontracts. In the meantime, without proper notice to the parents and children,you closed Lollard Street Adventure Playground and others.

Inmy last letter to you (16^th August), I queried the process theCouncil had adopted in this case. It did not seem to accord with its own codeof practice. We understand now that only two organisations/businesses appliedto run the Council’s seven Adventure Playgrounds at much reduced hours. Inthree of the playgrounds this would amount to only one session a week. Thecontract would be for six months starting immediately.

Now we are told that the contract cannot beawarded as, surprise surprise, the process was wrong! We are told today, that Lollard Street, andwe assume at least three others, will remain closed whilst the Council sortsitself out.

I ended my last letter to you, askingwhether this was the best we could do for our kids? Is it?

FOLSAP: Lollard Street Adventure Playground

The council have made considerable changes, detailed in the attached letter to users, to the opening hours of Lollard Street Adventure Playground. In effect the playground will now be open for only one day a week until next April when it is proposed, as part of the Co-operative Council Agenda, that the playground will be transferred to a new provider.

The Friends of Lollard Street Adventure Playground (FOLSAP) are continuing to seek out the means to keep this vital resource available to local children and their families and to reinstate the opening times to five days a week plus school holidays.

Dear Councillor Robbins

I hope you received my emails dated 13th and 16th August, as I have had no acknowledgement.

To summarize:

On June 16th FOLSAP organised a meeting of parents and children to which you explained Lambeth Council's proposals for outsourcing the management of Adventure Playgrounds in Lambeth. You explained that the voluntary and Council-run APs would be brought together under the auspices of some form of Trust. In response to our questions you assured us that if FOLSAP, for example, were to put forward a viable business plan, there was no reason why the Council should not pass the management of this AP to such a local group. If that were to happen you said that the amount of money allocated would be only £45,000.00 for the year, due to the Government cuts.

You told us that the APs would have to reduce their hours to one weekday session and Saturday mornings from September 1st. Parents and children at that meeting emphasised to you how important it was for this AP in Lollard Street to be open during the weekdays after school as parents relied on it as a safe place for their children to be if they were unable to get home from work; afterschool childcare being scarce and expensive with many parents having to take low-paid jobs with inflexible hours to make ends meet and maintain such benefits as they were entitled to. Indeed, it was agreed that this was a 'safeguarding issue' in a significantly impoverished area of Lambeth.

Following that meeting and recognising the very short timescale we had to develop a business plan we worked hard to do so. We consulted with possible partners, such as Lambeth Play Association and the Black Prince Community Trust. We tried, unsuccessfully, to obtain from your officers details of the terms under which the Council would be outsourcing this provision and what the liabilities would be, particularly in relation to existing staff and maintenance issues. Officers were courteous, but uninformative.

In the middle of August we were told two new things: that Lollard Street AP would be reducing its opening hours to one session on a weekday only. There would be no Saturday opening. Secondly, the Council would be seeking to offer our building to other voluntary groups who needed meeting provision. Officers would be calling a meeting of 'stakeholders' on 18th August at Lollard Street to tell us about the Cooperative Council (the Council seems to have found money to employ a consultant to do that) and what was the future for us.

Few, if any, stakeholders attended that meeting but the FOLSAP officers were there as arranged. We were told that bids had already been invited from play organisations currently under contract with the Council. The tender process would be closed on August 31st and our AP would be totally closed during the Bank Holiday week despite the fact that children were still on school holiday.

We were also told that there was no £45,000.00 available to a local management project. We asked for details of the Tender Specification and the list of approved contractors but officers did not feel able to share this with us without further advice.

Subsequently, I received from Sarah Warman both the Specification and the Approved List. I have to say that I was surprised to discover that the voluntary Adventure Playgrounds, far from being placed alongside the Council-run ones as you had explained, were actually on the Approved List for taking over the Council-run ones. I was also dismayed to see that the list included some projects that charge for entry.

Along with this information Sarah has also invited FOLSAP to a meeting on September 2nd to see how we could interact with the new provider.

What can I say? We all appreciate the position in which local authorities find themselves. We also thought we understood the ethos behind the 'Cooperative Council' but this experience has been an appalling one. Firstly, it all started too late, well after the Council knew where these cuts would lie. Secondly, Councillors and officers have presented mixed messages, not I think deliberately, but through incompetence and poor coordination. Thirdly, the Council has not acted with transparency and some of us are very doubtful as to the propriety of the tender process and the speed with which it has been implemented. Lastly, as we understand it, the successful bidder will take over its role next week, but only until April 1st. Is that right?

I went to the Kennington AP this morning and found just a scrawled ungrammatical note pinned to the gate saying that it would be closed this week. No explanation or other information about when it might be open. Two little boys were there with their table tennis bats. Their parents were back at work.
At Lollard Street there is no notice, just the timetable of the previous full week’s activities.
Is this the best we can all do for our kids?

The Seventh Kennington Association Charity Auction

Welcome to the Kennington Association’s Annual Charity Auction, an eagerly anticipated event in our community, which is now in its seventh year.

The money raised will go to our Secret Santa and Grey Power schemes, and proceeds from the sales of student art works will go to a Student Hardship Bursary at City & Guilds of London Art School. Secret Santa was initiated in 2005 to provide £40 worth of supermarket vouchers for 100 of the neediest young families in the neighbourhood. A new initiative in 2010, Grey Power funds a Christmas Day meal for isolated elderly people, with transport provided.

The KA would like to thank everyone who has worked so hard to make this auction a success, especially Winkworth Kennington for their sponsorship of £1,000 to underwrite all expenses, thereby ensuring that all funds raised go directly to our good causes. We are delighted that the Art School is again hosting the event and thank Magnus von Wistinghausen and Ursula Faure Romanelli for all their work in the planning throughout the year. We would also like to thank Sarah Lee at Countryside Alliance, who cheerfully takes delivery of and stores all artworks donated in the months and weeks leading up to the Auction, Andra Nelki for the catalogue photography, and The Black Prince PH for catering for the event. Crucial to the running of the auction are the many KA volunteers who beaver away in the background from early in the year to the night itself, with special gratitude for the expertise and good humour of our Auction Coordinator Pauline Amphlett.

Charity Auction: Here's a taster of what's come in so far....

Behind the scenes our volunteers are busy working on our Annual Charity Auction in September.

Huge thanks to Winkworth Estate Agents at Kennington Cross for sponsoring our Auction to the tune of £1000!! This will more than cover the costs involved in pulling it all together.

As last year, the Auction will be held at the City & Guilds of London Art School on Kennington Park Road. The date is Thursday, 22^nd September with a preview the evening before. This year, we are looking for paintings, small sculptures, figurines etc. that will bring in at least £20 each. We also are most anxious to receive vouchers from local businesses for restaurant meals, or food or wine or services – anything from baking a special-occasion cake to cleaning a patio!

We are already taking donations – artworks can be dropped off at the Countryside Alliance, The Old Town Hall, 367 Kennington Road SE11 4PT. Just phone Sarah Lee on 020 7840 9253 before you turn up. Note: It’s essential you fill out a donation form (below) and attach it to the work of art. Vouchers for pledges can be sent to KA at the below address.

Also, we still need a volunteer to coordinate volunteers! This mostly entails phoning around to get people to help out sorting, cleaning and moving items for the Auction. We have a check-list of tasks – you’ll just be asked to match up names with the job! You’ll also be asked to attend a few meetings of the Auction subcommittee to coordinate your activities with the other workers – we have nearly a dozen so far so you’ll meet new people and have fun as well.

The next meeting of the Auction sub-group is on Wednesday 3^rd August at 2.30pm at Madeira Star Café, 337-339 Kennington Rd SE11 4QE in the back room downstairs. If you are willing to volunteer to work on the Auction, you would be most welcome to join us.

Invitation for Community Meeting re Michaela Community School: Monday 18th July 7pm Ethelred Estate Community Youth Club 7 Lollard St SE11 6QH

Dear Neighbours

As many of our members are aware, a new secondary school, Michaela Community School, has been proposed to open in the Lilian Baylis Old School this autumn. The school is being proposed by Katharine Birbalsingh, who has featured in the news lately. The school would be one of the proposed ‘free schools’ that the government is encouraging parents and community groups to set up.

Many people are curious to know more about this school and how it will relate to our neighbourhood state schools, which are under Council jurisdiction. To this end, the Kennington Association has set up a meeting with Katharine Birbalsingh so that she can present her plans and we will have an opportunity to question her about them.

KA is not endorsing the plans but, given the interest KA has always had in this site, we should hear all proposals, including the Council's.

Dear Neighbours

As usual during the summer months, the KA will appear to be quiet – but behind the scenes we will be busy working on our Annual Charity Auction in September, AGM in October and our November Bazaar! Big thanks especially to Winkworth for stepping forward to underwrite our Auction.

As we move into the autumn, the work and donations of volunteers and local businesses is going to become even more important. In September, we’ll begin to see the full effect of Council funding cuts as well as cuts in government support to families. As I’m sure you’re aware, some of our neighbours are in for difficult times.

And we on the KA Committee would like to hear from you on which direction you think our organisation should head – where you think we should try to step in and make a difference, and where you are prepared to help. Our AGM is planned this year for Monday evening, 10^th October at the Durning Library, another stalwart of our community that is itself under threat. We will have a meet-and-greet chance to talk to each other starting at 6:30 and the meeting proper will begin at 7 pm.

Next April, KA will be ten years old! So please come to the AGM and help us set a course of action for the next decade.

Charity Auction

We have a sponsor!!! Huge thanks to Winkworth Estate Agents at Kennington Cross for sponsoring our annual Charity Auction to the tune of £1000!! This year’s Auction is planned to be even more fun than last year!! Brasserie Toulouse–Lautrec on Newington Butts is going to cater for us and we are looking into getting some music as well.

As last year, it will be held at the City & Guilds of London Art School on Kennington Park Road. The Auction date is Thursday, 22^nd September at 7pm with a preview the evening before. This year, we are looking for paintings, small sculptures, figurines etc. that will bring in at least £20 each. We also are most anxious to receive vouchers from local businesses for restaurant meals, or food or wine or services – anything from baking a special-occasion cake to cleaning a patio!

We are already taking donations – artworks can be dropped off at the Countryside Alliance, The Old Town Hall, 367 Kennington Road SE11 4PT. Just phone Sarah Lee on 020 7840 9253 before you turn up. Note: It’s essential you fill out a donation form (enclosed) and attach it to the work of art. Vouchers for pledges can be sent to KA at the above address.

Also, we still need a volunteer to coordinate volunteers! This mostly entails phoning around to get people to help out sorting, cleaning and moving items for the Auction. We have a checklist of tasks – you’ll just be asked to match up names with the job! You’ll also be asked to attend a few meetings of the Auction subcommittee to coordinate your activities with the other workers – we have nearly a dozen so far so you’ll meet new people and have fun as well.

March Bazaar Hits New High

Many people must have done their spring cleaning before our March Bazaar because we seemed to have a record number of donations! Books, clothes and bric-a-brac was piled so high our courageous volunteers sometimes felt swamped! We all felt it was well worth the work, however, when we counted the proceeds. After our expenses were deducted and we collected an extra hundred pounds from Chris Carey’s Collections, we raised a clear £815. As reported in our Winter Newsletter, the money will go to fund Tai Chi classes, free to all our community!

Once again, thanks to all our volunteers who collected donations and managed the stalls and the kitchen. Special thanks to Gisella who so brilliantly organized the day and donations. The next Bazaar is scheduled for 26^th November, but we are hoping to clear our garage and make space to receive donations by the end of July. So save that winter coat a little longer and you can donate it to the next KA Bazaar!

Traffic Island at Brixton Road/Camberwell New Road

Have you been driven to distraction by the new lane changes between buses and cars at this intersection? KA committee members met at the site, along with Val Shawcross, our representative on the London Assembly. Although Val agreed with some of the problems caused, Transport for London, responsible for all the bus routes and roads they run on, does not seem amenable to making changes, in spite of our strongly worded protest letter. The next move will be for concerned individuals to write to Valerie Shawcross CBE, Member for Lambeth & Southwark, London Assembly, City Hall, The Queen's Walk SE1 2AA or valerie.shawcross@london.gov.uk as a stack of protest letters may be more effective than one letter representing a group.

KA will continue to monitor the situation along with the evergreen problems of police and ambulance noise!

Lilian Baylis Old School

The Sports Action Zone has been granted £2 million to upgrade its Old Lilian Baylis building and has formed the Black Prince Trust to lease the land from the Council for this purpose. Good news for our community as the sports facilities, training and skill building SAZ provides to local young people will become ever more important as other locations may be forced to close.

In addition, it’s become clear that a new educational establishment named Michaela Community School in the Lilian Baylis Old School is being proposed by Katharine Birbalsingh, who has featured in the news lately. The school would be one of the proposed ‘free schools’ that the government is encouraging parents to support in lieu of sending their children to a state school. The question for all of us is "what impact will a free school have on local funding of our existing secondary schools and on their makeup?" The KA Committee is going to monitor this proposal and try to learn more that we will pass on to our members.

Committee Matters

We’ve had a few changes to the KA Committee since our last newsletter.

First, we have a new treasurer. Matina Gialama resigned recently because work, home and school commitments made it impossible for her to continue. We are very, very grateful to Lucy Wells for stepping forward to take on this critical role. Lucy moved to Kennington last autumn and decided to get involved in her new community by joining KA. We are delighted to have her on board!

We are also very happy to announce we have a new publicity coordinator, Andrea Steinlechner. She’ll be looking for lots of help in the coming months, so please contact kapublicitycoordinator@gmail.com if you’re interested in working on the team. Andrea has set up a list of specific tasks for which folk might easily volunteer without feeling they are making an endless commitment! She also needs help understanding how people want to get information. To help her, we are asking all members to respond to a very short questionnaire at http://svy.mk/KASurvey.

On the minus side, Dan Love has moved to Cornwall and resigned as corporate liaison. This job involves communicating with our larger corporate neighbours on matters we think affect the quality of life in our community such as noise and traffic. This position remains open. Membership Renewals – New Date, 1 October

Up until now, the KA has run a membership year based on when people join. As we’ve grown, this system has made it difficult to monitor membership and send out renewal notices during the proper month. Now we’re changing to make all memberships run from 1^st October each year. So if your membership has expired, be sure to get your cheque for £5 in to the above address now! All renewal payments made this summer count as paid up until 1 October 2012. Please write membership on the back of the cheque. If your membership is paid up by 1 October, you will be able to vote on issues raised at our AGM.

UPDATES

Tai Chi

Our Tai Chi classes are thriving and making good use of our dry, sunny weather to meet in Kennington Park. And we had some good news on the funding front – a successful bid by Jide Ashimi of Leo Vocational Service resulted in a grant of £750 from South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. This funded our instructor for 15 sessions. But money is still a major problem and likely to continue as funds for community programmes get tighter. In spite of the tremendous work done by Christine Eames-Jones in filling out long, detailed applications for grants, we still have no new long-term sponsor. Because these classes bring together so many people of different ages and backgrounds in our community, the KA is stepping in to make sure these classes can meet while we continue to pursue new sources of funding. Please feel free to join us on Thursdays at 2pm and Saturdays at 11am in Kennington Park near the Cafe. Beginners are always welcome. There’s nothing strenuous about Tai Chi, but people of all ages who attend are amazed at the strength they build up over the weeks and months.

For children, the introduction to Tai Chi is through Karate and last summer KA sponsored six weeks of Karate classes for kids at Lollard Street Adventure Playground. We plan to do the same this summer and use volunteers from the Tai Chi classes to come along and help the instructor, Michael Jacques, so more children have individual attention.
Friends of Lollard Street Adventure Playground

At the February meeting of Lambeth Council, over 200 people demonstrated to protest cuts, including children who spoke at the meeting to say how important the borough’s Adventure Playgrounds are to them. Unfortunately, in spite of these protests, Lambeth Council is continuing to move ahead with plans to get rid of any responsibility for running or funding playgrounds. All playgrounds are to be turned over to a co–operative council – yet to be formed – which will take over the responsibility the Council is abdicating. A private organization called the Lambeth Play Association will try to raise money from somewhere to run all adventure playgrounds on a very limited basis. As it stands, all Adventure Playgrounds in the borough will be open during the summer, but will be cut back to one day a week beginning in September. Once again, thanks to Chris Eames-Jones who has been leading FOLSAP in its fight to keep the Playground open.

Planning

The views of the KA Planning Forum under the chairmanship of David Boardman (see http://kaplanning.blogspot.com /) are being clearly acknowledged.

A councillor told Kennington Oval Vauxhall Forum in April that the Council had found KAPF's representation on the infrastructure study for Vauxhall Nine Elms Battersea (VNEB) very useful.

Victory at Bondway: KAPF, with others, made strong representations at the Planning Enquiry into the proposed high-rise development on Bondway in Vauxhall. The developer lost, then appealed, but was refused.

Sainsbury’s requested two meetings with KAPF to present their proposals for developing the site of their existing Nine Elms store on Wandsworth Road.

KAPF is also continuing to monitor proposed local developments including the planned extension to the Northern Line and to voice local needs and concerns with councillors and council officers. Local community groups continue to approach KAPF for advice.

We are looking especially for a few strong people to help collect and carry the more bulky items. We also need a van and driver to help pick up items from homes. We especially need help Friday evening. The next Bazaar is scheduled for Saturday, 12 March, from 11am to 1.30pm at St. Anselm’s Church Hall at Kennington Cross. Donations can be dropped off at the Hall on Friday evening between 6 and 8 pm and Saturday morning from 9 to10 am.

How much money we make is directly tied to how much is donated and how many people turn up, so please come along and help us. We hope to use the proceeds from the March Bazaar to fund Tai Chi classes, free to all our community!

Dear Neighbours

A new year and new challenges for the Kennington Association. Looking back over 2010, we have a lot to be proud of. Our Secret Santa fund provided Tesco vouchers to 100 local families to make their holiday a bit brighter. And a new initiative, we call Grey Power, provided a Christmas Day lunch for some older people in our community who might otherwise have spent the day alone. We also came to the rescue of the Tai Chi classes which unfortunately ran out of grants. Funds for these programs were raised through Bazaars and the Annual Charity Auction that cleared nearly £2000. For all of these activities we received very generous support from local businesses. And, of course, all required a lot of work from our volunteers. A heart-felt thanks to you all! In the following News items you’ll find more about the work we’ve done along with, for members, our financial statement for the year ending at our AGM in October.

As we start 2011, the KA wants to be even more successful in raising funds for local causes and also to try to streamline the work involved. Of course, we can always use more volunteers. I can’t stress enough that all the work of the KA – from running Bazaars to getting out this newsletter – is done by volunteers and we’d like to hear from you. Right now, we especially need a Volunteer Coordinator for the Charity Auction (more below). But we also need volunteers to do one-off jobs like stuff envelopes for mailings or deliver our letters in the neighbourhood. Please use the membership form to indicate how you’d like to get involved

Annual Charity Auction

The KA Annual Charity Auction was held on 16 September at the City & Guilds of London Art School. Once again, auctioneer Angus Aagaard entertained everyone with his patter and some truly beautiful pieces were auctioned from the very generous donations we received. We also got very valuable vouchers supplied by local firms for meals or services that together cleared nearly £2000 for KA causes Secret Santa and Grey Power (see below).

Our thanks to all the local businesses who made this possible, especially Nash Govani, owner of the Belgrave Hotel, near the Oval, who underwrote the Auction for £500 and whose staff handled the registration on Auction night.

This year’s Auction was coordinated by Pauline Amphlett, a local artist, who gave a tremendous amount of time procuring and displaying the works. She also took all the photos for the catalogue. This was a truly mammoth task, and planning is already underway to split this job up so the burden is not so great. Volunteers needed!!

In addition, several pieces of work by the students were auctioned to raise money for the school’s hardship fund that provides grants to students who suddenly find themselves short of money and might otherwise be forced to give up their studies. We received a very grateful letter of thanks from Magnus von Wistinghausen, deputy director of the school, for handling the student works that brought them over £2000 for their bursary. In turn, we thank Magnus for his help in putting on the Auction! Next year’s Auction is already on the Calendar for Thursday, 22 September with a preview the night before.

November Bazaar

In spite of a rather dreary day, the November 2010 Bazaar raised over £400, which was used to help sponsor our local Tai Chi classes. Once again, thanks to all our volunteers who collected donations and managed the stalls and the kitchen. Secret Santa

Thanks to donations plus money raised at the above functions, KA once again was able to provide £4000 in £40 supermarket vouchers to local families. As before, distribution was coordinated by Charmaine Clarke, Outreach Worker at Ethelred Children’s Centre. An Early Intervention Health Visitor, who was among those directly distributing the vouchers, wrote to let us know how pleased the recipients were. “I distributed the vouchers to seven vulnerable families I visit (one of whom had recently delivered twins) and they were all really surprised, thrilled and grateful.”

Grey Power

This year, KA launched a new initiative for older people we call Grey Power. Our inaugural event was a Christmas Day dinner at Brasserie Toulouse Lautrec. Working with Kim Connell, Community Services Manager at Age UK Lambeth, local older people were identified who live alone and usually spend Christmas Day alone. KA organised and paid for transportation provided by the Lambeth and Southwark Community Transport. Kim wrote to us afterwards saying. “Everyone had a really good day. One lady said ‘It was excellent from start to finish.’ The food was excellent and the staff at the restaurant made everyone feel special. It was enjoyed by all who attended. I know you must have all worked hard all year in your fund-raising efforts to have achieved all that you did for the families and older people in the Kennington area to celebrate Christmas.”

A special thanks to Cathy Preece who came up with the idea and did all the scheduling and coordination. KA hopes to do more to reach older people who may be isolated in our midst. If you have ideas of how we can identify and work with older people who would appreciate more involvement in our community, please volunteer to work with us.

UPDATES

Tai Chi

It’s good to be able to report that the free Tai Chi classes, which bring together so many people of different ages and backgrounds in our community, are continuing. Unfortunately, it’s becoming ever more difficult to find funding for both the instructor and the venue. We’re young and old, very athletic and less able-bodied and come from various economic and ethnic backgrounds – which we think is one of our greatest strengths. However, the very diversity in class members means they don’t fit into the ever-narrowing profiles that many funding groups want to support. As a result, the KA is stepping up to make sure these classes can meet while we continue to pursue new sources of funding. Our thanks to Christine Eames-Jones for her tireless work on funding applications. We will keep you posted on our success. In the meantime, please feel free to join us on Thursdays 2 pm at the Kennington Park Community Centre and Saturdays at 11 am at the Oval Cricket Ground . Beginners are always welcome.

Friends of Lollard Street Adventure Playground

As we all know, local government cutbacks are coming and play programmes are likely targets – Lambeth Council has indicated already it may cut opening hours of adventure playgrounds and turn over responsibility to a Cooperative Development Trust. In spite of this, the FOLSAP have received some good news. Sarah Warman, head of Community Children’s Services at Lambeth has found some money from the BIG Lottery to provide funding to develop a new structure on the site. She has told us the Council is funding the purchase of materials and will release staff resource to support further development at the site. These should enable some improvements and development at the playground. Once again, thanks to Chris Eames-Jones who has been dogged in pursuing this funding from the Council.

This summer, KA sponsored 6 weekly classes of Karate for Kids, free to local children during the summer holidays. These were held at the Playground, and made up an important part of some children’s holiday activities. Planning

The KA Planning Forum is continuing to monitor plans by Lambeth Council and the Mayor’s office for a number of huge residential high-rises along the river. These blocks will increase our population density astronomically, but, unfortunately, the plans are being developed without providing for infrastructure of transport, schools and other amenities that are so essential! The KA Planning Forum is busy studying proposals and voicing local concerns.

HELP NEEDED – CHARITY AUCTION VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR

The Kennington Association is made up entirely of volunteers, and we could use a special person to step forward right now. We are looking for a Volunteer Coordinator for the Charity Auction. This person works with the Auction Coordinator to schedule volunteers for specific tasks. Newcomers can be assured they’ll have a lot of help and be part of a team, not working in isolation. We have a list of volunteers and your job will be to learn how we put together the Charity Auction (we’ve done it half a dozen times already!) and schedule volunteers for the various tasks we’ve defined. If you’d like to get to know more people in the community, this would be a good way to start! You’ll be part of the KA Committee and asked to attend monthly committee meetings, important because it’s the only time we get together so we all know what’s going on. Committee meetings are held the last Monday of each month near Kennington Cross. (Of course, we realise that everyone has many commitments so can’t always be available.) But we’re a group who enjoy ourselves, too, and have regular lunches and social outings as well as committee meetings! FOLSAP - cuts to Adventure Playgrounds

Dear All,

As you may have heard, the council is proposing to cut the budget for Adventure Playgrounds by £700K by reducing opening hours to Saturdays and school holidays only and hand control of the service to a Co-operative Development trust.

At our last FOLSAP meeting we agreed to do two things:

Lobby the Council on Monday 7th Feb at the Town Hall at 6.30pm
Discuss an alternative plan for maintaining the playground in Lollard Street at our next meeting - 2.00 pm Tues 22nd Feb.

Please make every effort to get to the lobby

"I don't know whether other people have been affected, but a new traffic island, separating cars from the bus lane has been placed on Kennington Park Road as it becomes Brixton Road. This makes it very dangerous for cars to drive down Kennington Park Road/Brixton Road to Camberwell New Road (since they can't use the left lane as it's a bus lane) and so are positioned on the right. Buses, meanwhile, are trying to take the right hand fork down Brixton Road, but they're positioned on the left, making a dangerous car/bus cross over inevitable. I've attached a bad diagram, but could KA enquire whether others have this issue?"

Charity Auction 2010 raises over £2,000 for Art School hardship fund

Lollard Street Adventure Playground is holding a Family Fun Day

to celebrate the work of this great community resource for local children.

FROM THE CHAIR

Although we’re still awaiting summer, KA has already started thinking about Christmas!! Each year, KA funds a Secret Santa scheme – cash vouchers presented to local residents that can make a real difference in the holidays. This year, we’re also trying to fund Christmas lunch for older residents in the neighbourhood. Two projects are key to raising funds: a bookstall at the Kennington Fete and our annual Charity Auction. (See below)

The Auction is held in September at the City & Guilds of London Art School on Kennington Park Road. And, in keeping with the setting, I’d like to make a special appeal for artwork to be donated by as many people as possible. All kinds of artwork are welcome – if you have pieces in a cupboard that no longer interest you, please send them. If you’re an amateur artist and can produce a sketch or watercolour, we’d love to hear from you! And, of course, we urge all our area’s many professional artists to consider donating work. Paintings, posters, small sculptures, ceramics and stained glass are equally welcome.

Once summer comes, we all find ourselves very busy, and August can come and go before we know it! As we need time to produce a catalogue, please think now about what you can donate and contact us as soon as possible. We can provide storage and arrange to pick up pieces if you let us know your needs. And local families will really appreciate your generosity. As one of our coordinators remarked, “Knowing local people care at Christmas is as important to the recipients as the gifts themselves.”

CATHY PREECE WINS LAMBETH CIVIC AWARD

Congratulations to our very own Cathy Preece who was this year awarded the Council’s Civic Award for North Lambeth for her role as guiding force behind the Kennington Association. Cathy was one of the founding members of KA back in 2002 and continues to serve as administrative assistant, keeping all the mailing lists, calendar and coordinating many activities. She has been personally involved in every initiative the group has carried out from its formation when it attempted to change the boundary route of the congestion zone to setting up Tai Chi classes to finding a home for the Ecuadorian volleyball club. As the award certificate cited, “Many groups form to be against an issue, then fall apart after the fight is over; but, with Cathy’s hard work and commitment, KA continues to flourish.”

Cathy’s also involved in other local activies – she’s leading a walk through the heart of Kennington on Sunday, 23 May as part of the Ramblers’ Get Walking Day. (See calendar)

THANKS TO KEVIN

As you can see above, KA Deputy Chair is now open. Our very sincere thanks to Kevin Rimmington who’s been filling this post. Kevin joined KA in 2005 through the Tai Chi classes and soon took over the onerous job of securing Tai Chi funding from charities, as well as acting as corporate liaison for KA and serving as our voice with Surrey County Cricket Club. He became Deputy Chair two years ago. His enthusiasm and humour will be sadly missed. He’ll be a hard act to follow, but we’d love to hear from volunteers!

Friends of Lollard Street Adventure Playground (FoLSAP)

Kate Hoey MP visited Lollard Street Adventure Playground in February to plant a “Vauxhall Apple” tree, donated by Roots and Shoots, and to unveil a mosaic – “praying hands”. The mosaic was created by the children to commemorate a member of staff who lost his life as the result of a road accident and in remembrance of two children who once used the playground but have since sadly died. We’re happy to report the apple tree is doing well and blossomed in late April.

You too can help to keep this vital local resource for children alive and flourishing by coming along to the public meeting at The Royal Oak Pub at 6.00pm on Monday 10^th May to launch the Friends of Lollard Street Adventure Playground (FOLSAP). (See calendar below.)

MARCH BAZAAR SUCCESS

The bazaar held in March brought in £597.80 total with £492.35 after expenses to replenish our funds. Thanks to all who donated and helped out, and a special thanks, as always, to coordinator Gisella Azzopardi. The next bazaar is scheduled for Saturday, 17^th July. As usual, we need many volunteers: special needs this time include someone to take on the kitchen and teas and someone to organise publicity and distribution of posters. We hope to use the proceeds from the July bazaar to fund a programme in the summer for neighbourhood children. If you can help with the kitchen or publicity, please call Gisella on 020 7820 0434.

Kennington Business Network kickS off

The inaugural Annual General Meeting of the Kennington Business Network (KBN) was held at the Oval on Wednesday 21^st April 2010 chaired by Mike Cooper of Mike Cooper Voiceover, who has been on the interim steering committee. Following a short tribute to the new group by Anna Tapsell, chair of KA, the KBN got down to the main business of the evening which was to elect an executive committee and committee members.

Houman Meshkati of Amici Bar & Italian Restaurant in Kennington Lane was elected chair. Lullyn Tavares of Bodystyles in Bolney Street will serve as secretary. Kowsar Hoque of Kennington Tandoori in Kennington Road is a committee member. More committee members are needed on the board, including someone for the role of treasurer. Potential members or officers should contact Houman at kbn@amici-london.com or Lullyn at kenningtonbn@gmail.com for information or to volunteer. It was agreed that another KBN meeting will be arranged shortly.

The KBN is being set up with the broad aims of providing a voice for businesses, an opportunity for businesses to network with one another, and a forum for discussing local issues and providing mutual collaboration. Its intent is to become independent in views and organisation from both the Council and KA.

The KBN would like to thank both the Kennington Association and Lambeth Council for their very generous support in helping the KBN to get started. Vicky Ratcliffe and Keith Trotter of the Council have been invaluable in steering the group through the formative process, and Cathy Preece of KA has been generous in providing contacts and mailing lists of businesses in the area.

SIRENS SUBDUED!! (SOMEWHAT)

Noise from police sirens seems to have increased recently, especially at night along Kennington Road. Although we realise the need for safety, it seems at night especially, the noise could be reduced. As a result of our concern, KA wrote recently to the Met’s South Central Area Commander to ask if the noise could be kept to a minimum and suggest that police cars be fitted with directional sirens rather than those that blast all around. This follows an earlier request, made several years ago, that produced a result for a time. Although it’s too early to tell what lasting effect the complaint will have, it did produce an article in the South London Press, always a good sign!!

UPDATES

CHARITY AUCTION

We are moving ahead with planning the Sixth Annual Art Auction that is our key event in raising money for the Secret Santa and City & Guilds Art College Student Bursary. The event gives us the opportunity to raise substantial funds (over £4,000 last year!) to support local families with gift vouchers that help make Christmas a special occasion and provide funds for college students who need that bit of extra financial help. It's very much a local event for local people, and we're looking forward to the opportunity to raise money and rise to the challenge of organising a successful event.

The Art Auction will take place on Thursday 16^th September at the City & Guilds of London Art School on Kennington Road /Cleaver Square, with a viewing on the evening of 15^th September. This year there will be more of an emphasis on prints and smaller works of art, but there will be something for everyone as we also have a book stall and some antiques and collectables for auction.

We are looking for donations of good quality art works please! We are also in need of some support from KA members and anyone else who would be willing to help with promoting the event, or collecting or taking in work. (We're in the process of organising a storage space.) Also, we need helpers on the viewing and auction nights.

In addition to the art works, we receive tremendous support from corporate and individual donors in the form of pledges, which include things like meals in local restaurants, donations of skills such as garden advice, tours of the college, conservation department etc. Any pledges are most gratefully received.

Our first corporate sponsor, Nash Govani of the Belgrave Hotel, has kindly donated a very generous £500 for which we thank him very much.

SPORTS AND FITNESS

Tai Chi

It is great to be able to report that the Saturday Tai Chi class will continue throughout the summer thanks to the award of a grant from Capital Community Foundation's Sports Relief Community Cash. Kudos to Christine Eames-Jones who put together the proposal that won the funding!

Now that the weather has improved, the Thursday Tai Chi class has returned to Kennington Park and the Saturday class will do likewise from Saturday 1^st May. Both classes are free of charge and open to all. You are welcome to join us in front of the café in the park any Thursday at 2 pm and Saturday at 11am.

Ecuavolley

Ecuadorian volleyball (Ecuavolley) continues happily in the sports hall at the Old Lilian Baylis School on Friday 6pm to 9pm, Saturday 3pm to 9pm and Sunday 4pm to 9pm. Anyone wanting further details should contact Galo Espin on 07985 603189.

PLANNING

If you follow planning applications in our area, you’ll be aware that an alarming number of high-rise buildings have been proposed for a very small area between the river and Kennington. The KA Planning Forum has been kept busy tracking the progress of the proposals.

Vauxhall Sky Gardens, a 36-storey building proposed for the corner of Wandsworth Road and Wyvil Road, was accepted by the Council pending the Mayor’s approval, which is very likely. The Planning Forum is working on NOT getting mayoral approval.

The Octave Tower / Bondway project is a 46-storey building proposed for the triangle near Vauxhall bus depot. It is not approved and will go before public inquiry sometime in the summer. If all these buildings were to be approved, we would end up with five tower blocks around Vauxhall Park. This will be part of the basis for objecting.

Guided by David Boardman in the chair, the KAPF has developed into a dynamic sub-group of the KA, meeting monthly on the second Tuesday in the evening. Do be in touch if you would like to get involved.

New friends wanted for Lollard Street Adventure Playground

Lollard Street Adventure Playground was created in 1954 on the site of a school that had been bombed during the war years. It provides school-aged children with opportunities to play after school, at weekends and during school holidays, which are difficult to find elsewhere in our area. Fenced and secure, the playground is an oasis where children are supervised by trained, professional playworkers who are always on hand to help out if needed, but also know when to stand back and let children work things out for themselves. LSAP has quiet indoor space where children can do homework or creative arts and outdoor space with unique play structures. Kids love it as a place where they can run about and create games, and parents know there are responsible adults at hand. But unfortunately as government purse strings are tightened, funding for these irreplaceable areas is often the first to go! LSAP is sadly in need of investment, which the council is hesitating to provide.

KA wants make sure Lollard Street Adventure Playground has a secure future and to this end is helping to launch a friends group. An inaugural meeting held at the beginning of the year to discuss a FOLSAP initiative was very fruitful. Both adults and children attended and discussions for the future focused on the children’s ideas for its development. All agreed to set about forming the Friends of Lollard Street Adventure Playground (FOLSAP) with the first public meeting to be held on Monday 10^th May at 6pm in the Royal Oak PH, Fitzalan Street SE11 6QU.

Roots and Shoots have already donated a "Cellini", the 'Vauxhall Apple' tree, which was planted in the Playground with hopes it will form the centre of a tree house which the children have asked for. The tree has a special meaning for the Playground as it commemorates Paul Hendrich, a part-time worker who was knocked off his bike in January 2008 as well as two children who used the playground, Chevlyn and Kharim. Playground staff and children have done a mosaic ‘praying hands’ in memory of these three and it was dedicated along with the tree planting by Kate Hoey MP at a special ceremony in February.

Do please come along to the public meeting to show your support for the playground and help to launch the Friends of Lollard Street Adventure Playground (FOLSAP).

Police have been told to limit the use of sirens

POLICE have been told to limit the use of sirens late at night to avoid disturbing people’s sleep.

After a flood of complaints they have been warned to sound them only when absolutely necessary in the evening and early morning in Kennington, south London.

The area, two miles south of the Houses of Parliament, is home to many MPs including Justice Secretary Jack Straw and Shadow Business Secretary Kenneth Clarke.

Cathy Preece of community group The Kennington Association, said: “The police are far worse than the fire brigade or ambulance service and should remember this is a residential area.”
